The cost to fix a broken elevator at the old Bon-Ton building in downtown York, also called Government Center, is rising.
The county commissioners on Wednesday unanimously decided to spend $17,242 more on the project to enlarge a tunnel for a cylinder that drives the elevator car.
Facilities manager Scott Cassel said the tunnel is not big enough to hold a cylinder that meets state requirements. It needs to be wider by two to three inches, he said. The change order boosts the cost of the project to almost $60,000, Cassel said. ThyssenKrupp Elevator's York office will handle the project.
Government Center houses some of the county's human services agencies.
The elevator should be repaired by the end of January, Cassel said.
