The Sheridan Press, 450 Fame Ave., Hanover, will lay off about 35 composition and editorial employees effective Jan. 31.
The company decided to discontinue those services to "streamline" those operations to its sister plant, Dartmouth Journal Services, of Waterbury, Vt., and avoid duplicating services, said Susan Parente, company sales and marketing manager in Hanover.
The 400-employee Hanover operation, whose parent is The Sheridan Group, based in Hunt Valley, Md., has offered the laid-off employees telecommuting jobs to the Waterbury plant, meaning that they can work out of their homes from this area.
Parente said she didn't know how many have opted to do so, but said the opportunity was "well received" when the company announced the consolidation plan in late October.
She said the layoffs have nothing to do with the dismal economy.
"Due to significant pressures brought on by low-cost competitors located outside of the United States, and the ongoing need for investment in technology to support our front-end services, The Sheridan Group has decided to consolidate all editorial and composition services to the largest existing location, which is Dartmouth Journal Services," the company said in an October statement that was released to the media upon request.

The Sheridan Press was founded in 1915 in Hanover and provides printing and publishing service to more than 300 scholarly commercial printers, associations and societies and university presses. The plant operates 24 hours a day, six days a week and prints more than 2,000 journal titles.
