Powerlifters big and small will descend upon York this weekend for the International Powerlifting Association's World Powerlifting and Bench Press Championships at York Barbell.

The competition, sponsored by Mark and Ellen Chaillet of Chaillet's Private Fitness, gets under way for teens, women and men up to 220 pounds at 9 a.m. Saturday and includes 16-year-old Elijah Ruth of Red Lion.

On Sunday, some of the world's best will participate in the men's championships for weight classes 242 pounds through heavyweight beginning at 9 a.m.

The highlight event will be a "pro-only" extravaganza for men and women of all weight classes at noon Sunday with $10,000 in prize money up for grabs.

Many of the top powerlifters in the U.S. and the Ukraine will be competing, including Paul Childress, Matt Wilson and Cheryl Clodfelter.

"Pretty much everybody that is very well-known in the sport will be there," Ellen Chaillet said. "It attracts a lot of the strongest in the sport, spanning all of the organizations."

Chaillet added that with the quality of participants, records are expected to fall during the competition.

However, this is not strictly an indoor event.

There will be a "Cradle of Iron Strongman Show," sponsored by the North American Strongman and Linden Yard Strongman, on the grounds at York Barbell with athletes flipping tires, pressing axles and logs, along with moving 400-plus pound stones and other objects.
