Overwhelmed by long lines and some impatient people, Southern York County Regional Police were called to a mobile flu clinic in New Freedom this morning to calm some crowd members.

Police Chief James Childs said he responded to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church on Main Street after some people felt they were getting cheated because other people were jumping in a line.

Childs said he had to warn a man who became angry, profane and belligerent with fire police, who were directing traffic into the church parking lot.

The police chief said he had to walk in-between vehicles waiting in line and tell people to be patient after several others also became mouthy and anxious.

"I basically had to calm people down," Childs said.

it opened at 9 a.m.

The problem began when a car broke down in a single line filtering into the registration and flu shot area, Childs said. A second line was also deemed necessary because traffic began to back onto Campbell Road, he said.

Childs estimated there were 500 vehicles trying to get in and out of the scheduled two-hour clinic through the morning.

"Some people thought they were being cheated by other people who did not wait as long," Child said.

manageable, Childs said he had to give some people a "stern warning." He also said he had to reassure anxious people that the clinic would not run out of flu shots.

Overall, Childs said most people were understanding.

"I think the problem was more people came out than expected. There were more people than anyone anticipated," Childs said.

SHOTS CANCELED

The Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic scheduled for Sunday at the Manchester Township Municipal Office has been canceled.

It was to be offered by the York County Area Agency on Aging and its partners, WellSpan Health and the York City Bureau of Health.

After immunizing several thousand York County residents, all of the allotted vaccine has been distributed, according to officials. Residents are advised to continue to check with their primary care physicians for future availability of the seasonal flu vaccine.
