Joseph Goetz, 48, formerly of Windsor Township, pleaded guilty to taking $280,274 in six bank robberies between 2004 and 2008.
The banks were in Springettsbury Township, Shrewsbury, Severna Park, Md., Parkton, Md., and Bel Air, Md.
Goetz entered his guilty plea Oct. 1 to U.S. Middle District Court Judge Christopher Conner. He is expected to be sentenced Jan. 11. He faces a maximum of 140 years in prison and a $1.75 million fine.
According to court records, Goetz also pleaded guilty in federal court to attempting a Nov. 13, 2008, robbery of the Susquehanna Bank in Springettsbury Township.
According to police, Goetz entered the bank early, before the three tellers on duty had received any cash for their drawers. He vowed to file a complaint with the manager before leaving the bank empty-handed.
Goetz also has pending attempted robbery charges in York County Court for that case.
Goetz was sentenced to five years in prison in 1997 and lost his job as a police officer after pleading guilty to two counts of robbery with a deadly weapon and using a handgun in a crime of violence.
According to court records, Goetz hijacked a UPS truck after suspecting his estranged wife was having an affair with the driver. Goetz ended up hijacking the wrong driver, police said.
