Police believe speed played a role in the two-vehicle crash that killed a Gettysburg man just west of borough limits Thursday evening.

Freddie Lain II, 43-years-old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cumberland Township Officer Tim Biggins said Lain was riding a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle east on Route 30 - presumably at a high rate of speed - when he crested a hill and struck the rear of another vehicle.

The 1989 Chevy Caprice - driven by S.H. Towns, 63, of Biglerville - had just pulled out of the Gettysburg West Apartments complex, 721 Chambersburg Road (Route 30), Biggins said.

Towns and his passenger were not injured.

Todd LaRue, 18, stood outside his Gettysburg home Thursday watching police and firefighters stabilize the scene of a fatal accident. The dead man's motorcycle lay just a few feet away from him, on the other side of his family's driveway.

LaRue said he has lived there for 13 years and can remember "four or five" other vehicle's crashes on the same stretch of Route 30. But none were as bad as Thursday's, he said.

Though he did not witness the crash, LaRue said, he wouldn't be surprised if speed played a role. Drivers often speed down Chambersburg Road, he said.

The accident closed Route 30 in both directions. Cumberland Township Police were assisted by the Gettysburg Fire Dept., Medic 28, the Adams County Coroner and Gettysburg Fire Police.

Biggins said Cumberland Township Police were able to interview numerous witnesses
