Starting at midnight on Dec. 25, Donald E. Ryan will play seasonal songs for 30 minutes on the factory whistle at the New York Wire Company on East Market Street in York. A rehearsal session will take place Thursday morning from 9 to 10 a.m. This year, direct expenses for the concert are $15,000, organizers said.
The Susquehanna Gateway Heritage Area has coordinated and managed funding for the concert for four years. But according to a news release, the economy has obliged the foundation to end that role after this year's concert.
Those wishing to make tax-deductible contributions toward continuing the concert may send them to: Steam Whistle Concert Fund, c/o PeoplesBank, 48 East Market Street, York, Pa. 17401.
