Neida Elizabeth Baez listened to her boyfriend beat her 2-year-old daughter with a video game controller, court documents state.
For the 45 to 60 minutes Darisabel Baez was battered, police said, her mother did nothing.
On Wednesday, York City Police filed a criminal homicide charge against the 20-year-old, who has been in York County Prison since her daughter was killed in early April.
Her boyfriend, Harve L. Johnson, 26, was also in York County Prison. He's also charged with criminal homicide in Darisabel's death.
Johnson lived with Neida Baez and her daughter at an apartment in the 700 block of West Philadelphia Street in York.
Darisabel was beaten with a video game controller and its cord April 6.
Police
accused Johnson of wielding the controller and said her mother heard the toddler's cries and screams but didn't try to help.After the beating, Johnson put the toddler in a bathtub to revive her, but she remained unresponsive, according to court documents.
Johnson then brought the wet, limp child to her mother, and the two began CPR, police said.
Darisabel was taken to York Hospital and later flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
The girl was in the critical care unit in a vegetative state on life support . The most dire injuries were to her brain, police said.
Darisabel died the day after the beating.
York City Detective Dana Ward said investigators discussed the case with the York County District Attorney's
Johnson initially faces assault charges, but the charges were upgraded to criminal homicide when Darisabel died.
He is not the toddler's biological father, but Ward said Johnson has at least one child of his own with another woman.
The couple have a preliminary hearing Aug. 5 in York, according to court records.
Darisabel is survived by grandparents Margarita Torres Leon and Luis Arturo Leon, both of York, and a host of other relatives. They could not be reached for comment Thursday.
