The York Daily Record/Sunday News has named its winter 2007 YAIAA varsity girls' swimmers of the year.

Swimmer of the year

Lauren Schmittle, York Suburban: Two was the magic number for the junior. As in two gold medals at the PIAA Class AA championships, winning both the 200 and 100 freestyle races. She was also a key component on the Trojans' 200 free relay team that set a school record while winning a fourth-place medal at states.

All-stars

Jenna Bentz, York Suburban: The Trojans' emotional leader, was eighth at the YAIAA meet in the 500 freestyle, but earned a fifth-place medal at the District 3 Class AA meet. She was also fifth in both the league and district in the 200 free.

Rebecca Irvine, Northeastern: Won bronze and silver in the 500 and 200 free at the league meet, she went seventh in the 200 and ninth in the 500 at AA districts. The senior went on to make the consolation finals in the 200 at states.

Allie Jenkins, Spring Grove: The sophomore was second in YAIAA and seventh in 200 individual medley at districts. She showed her versatility by going fourth in league and ninth in the 500 free.

Kelsie Jones, Spring Grove: Qualified for states in the 100 backstroke and finished 22nd in the scary-tough Class AAA. The junior was second in the league and ninth in District 3 in the back. She was also third in the YAIAA in the 100 butterfly.

Lauren Magalski, Spring Grove: The sophomore posted great scores all season and maintained her form as well, winning a silver medal at the District 3 AAA diving meet, the same medal she won at the YAIAA competition.

Karley Marquet, Dallastown: The sophomore earned her second all-star nod after helping the Wildcats to an undefeated season. Marquet earned two gold medals in the 100 breaststroke and 200 medley relay at the YAIAA meet. She closed out the season with a bronze in 200 medley relay at the district Class AAA meet.

Haley Miller, Dover: An outstanding senior swimmer, Miller was the YAIAA champ in the 100 fly and went on to place second in the event at districts. She was also second in 200 free at YAIAA meet, but switched to the 100 free at districts and was fifth.

Amie Mowery, New Oxford: Closed out a stellar career with the Colonials by placing second in the YAIAA in the 100 fly and third in the IM. Mowery went to AAA districts and went 14th in the fly and 16th in IM.

Morgan Oberlander, Dallastown: Perhaps the league's most versatile swimmer, the junior was the YAIAA champion in the IM and the 500 free. She was sixth in the IM and switched to the 100 fly and placed ninth in AAA districts.

Laura Rowlands, Dover: The District 3 Class AA diving champ really made her mark this season. She was terrific at the PIAA meet as well, earning a medal for her seventh-place finish. The super soph was third in the YAIAA.

Tori Shearer, Dallastown: One of only a handful of YAIAA girls to qualify for the unbelievably difficult Class AAA state meet, the junior was the YAIAA champ in the 50 free and finished fifth in districts. Unfortunately illness slowed her at states, where she placed 22nd. She was on the Wildcats District 3 bronze medal winning medley and 200 free relays.

Emily Slobodian, Dallastown: Another Wildcat junior, Slobodian was first in league in the 100 back and 12th at districts. Like many of her teammates, she could do more individually but relishes leading relay teams to success and was on the district medal winners as well.

Leigh Waltz, Dallastown: She just got better and better this season and even won the District 3 Class AAA diving crown. The sophomore, who also won the YAIAA diving title, followed with an impressive eighth-place medal at the PIAA meet.

Coach of the year

Rich Howley, Dallastown: Ho-hum. Another undefeated season and YAIAA championship for the Dallastown girls and another honor for Howley.

His girls will typically sacrifice individual accomplishments for the good of the team and this year was no exception as the Wildcats relays were terrific, placing third in the 200 medley and 200 free relays at the District 3 Class AAA meet.

While the Wildcats always have the deepest team around, someone has got to push the right buttons and once again, that someone was Rich Howley.
