A Harrisburg museum received two medals of honor donations from a soldier's family, according to a news release.

The National Civil War Museum was awarded the medals Saturday to add to its permanent collection in a ceremony in Harrisburg, officials said.

The donated medals belonged to Capt. James D. Vernay, who was given the awards for his efforts shortly before the Siege of Vicksburg, one in 1894 and a second, updated version of the medal was given to Vernay in 1904, museum officials said.

In other donations, the museum also received a Grand Army of the Republic membership badge belonging to Vernay, his photograph, and a picture of his wife, Mary Vernay, and several letters from the federal War Department on the medals.

The museum is located at 1 Lincoln Circle near Reservoir Park in the state's capital.
