The hole truth
Bon Air's No. 1: The fairway bends right but falls away to the left from the tee on this dogleg right, but a shot too far right invites trouble all the way to the hole with a line of trees and thick rough.
After a good drive, the second shot should be on the left side of the fairway, below the hole, for the best approach angle.
Guarded by bunkers left and right, the hillside green is hard to hold and difficult to putt, especially from anywhere above the hole. Believe me, it's not just the distance that is challenging on York County's only 600-yard hole.
Standard yardage: 608, 582, 464
Players say
"When it opened, the right-hand side of the green was like a 45-degree angle, and there was out-of-bounds right from 220 yards in ... You have about a 10-by-10-foot landing area to hold a shot, even if you're hitting a 9(-iron) or even an 8.
"I could tell you a lot of stories about that hole; Ray
Barry Black, longtime Bon-Air member who serves on the YCAGA Slope Committee.
"That green is always hard and it's always fast."
Craig Morrow, 2005 Briarwood East club champion.
