The hole truth

Bon Air's No. 2: One of the prettiest par 3s you'll find, this hole demands a controlled shot from an elevated tee to carry a lake in its final 90 yards.

Anything long, and you're chipping from a downhill lie toward the water.

With a bunker on the left to catch stray shots, this green is generously large, but that introduces the danger of a three-putt on a surface anything but level.

This beautiful hole is a pleasure to play, no matter what you score.

Standard yardage: 177, 163, 95

Players say

"I think it's a challenging hole. If you're short, you're in the water. The green runs back to front, toward the water.

"You have to make a decision on the tee whether to challenge the water and try to be below the hole or play it safe and have a downhill putt.

"A front pin is the toughest to birdie."

Panel member T.J. Ostrom, three-time York County Amateur champion.

"When you stand on the tee, the first thing that sticks

out in your mind is how big that lake is and how small the green is. When you get over there, the green is bigger than it looks.

"There's always wind, either right or left and against you. It's never with you. I try to gauge it by the fountain or throw up some grass.

"The green's kind of tricky. Even if you're on, you're not guaranteed a par."

Tim Meckley, longtime member and three-time club champion.
