Hundreds of people visited WellSpan Health's Career Day Festival at Apple Hill Medical Center in York Township Sunday afternoon, where the county's largest employer showcased its departments and gauged the public's interest in health care careers.

The twice-a-year event works a lot like a job fair. WellSpan employees from multiple departments -- including neuroscience, orthopedic surgery, emergency services and ultrasound -- stand at booths set up along the center's hallways, fielding questions from prospective employees.

Job-seekers must apply online, said Stephanie Workinger, the company's senior human resources representative.

The health care field is always looking for new employees because "people are always gonna get sick," Workinger said.

"Health care is around to stay," Workinger said. "I think a lot of people see that as a stable job."

People from all walks of life attended the festival, including high-school students wearing hooded sweatshirts, recent college graduates looking for their dream jobs and Harley-Davidson employees such as Toby Reigart, of York Township, scouting out new opportunities in case the local plant leaves town.

Radiology and pharmacy tech jobs looked appealing, Reigart said, because they lined up with his previous experience. Even though he views the plant's departure as "unlikely," Reigart said he wants to be ready if it decides to leave.

"I'm looking to be proactive, rather than reactive," Reigart said. "Plan ahead, if

needed."

Meanwhile, Ben Mathews, a Spring Grove Area High School junior, browsed the booths, looking for a hands-on job that would allow him to help people.

Performing surgery, Ben said, would be nice.

"I'm a hands-on kind of person," Ben said. "I wouldn't want to be in a job where I'm really cramped."
