The Central York School Board on Monday will discuss whether to keep an 1840s farmhouse on 52 acres that the district condemned and purchased two years ago for $3.2 million.

The property, at 483 Sinking Springs Lane in Manchester Township, is adjacent to Roundtown and Sinking Springs elementary schools, said Julie Randall Romig, the district's director of communications.

The district bought the property from Sinking Springs Farms in 2007, she said.

At that time, the school board did not have plans for the land but wanted options to expand or build additional schools.

The district rented out the property until tenants vacated the farmhouse earlier this year, Romig said.

According to Nov. 19, 2007, board meeting minutes, a resolution of condemnation for the district's purchase of the property was explained as a formality that would lower transfer costs for buyer and seller. At that time, the board voted to adopt that resolution.

Last month, Central Supt. Michael Snell said the farmhouse would need several repairs before it could be rented.

Sinkhole: In other Central York School District news, the school board recently discussed a nine-square-foot "sinkhole."

The depression, located behind the high school, was discovered about two weeks ago, Romig said.

The problem is believed to be a continuation of a previously discovered and remediated sinkhole related to construction, she said.
