Melissa Beck of York Haven receives a kiss at the Olde York Street Fair, an annual Mother's Day tradition.

Fifteen-year-old Aaron Hock phones his grandmother every day, just to chat for about an hour.

Why?

Because Aaron's mom, Kathy Hock, raised him to be loving, caring and appreciative of others.

Why?

Because her mom, Eleanor List, taught her those same values.

List, Hock, of East Prospect and Aaron were at the Olde York Street Fair on Sunday to celebrate Mother's Day. They've been attending the annual event together for many years.

The three generations took a break during the fair and shared what makes a good mom and grandmother.

"We talk about '24,' 'Deal Or No Deal,' " Aaron said of TV shows he and List watch. "I like . . . just funny things she says."

Kathy Hock said List raised her and her siblings on the little money she earned from working in a pretzel factory.

"She's the strongest woman I know," Kathy Hock said. "She's special."

About 70,000 moms and others attended the fair, which included more than 150 arts, crafts and food vendors, and many entertainers, said Kelley Gibson, special events coordinator for the Street Fair.

York resident Jessica Shaffer and her daughter, Hayley, 4, said they have fun spending time together at the event every year.

"She likes to get her face painted," Shaffer said.

At one of the booths Sunday, Hayley also helped paint a large bed sheet that will be taken to Washington, D.C., to promote 1Sky, an organization that raises awareness about global warming.

"This is a perfect thing to do on Mother's Day," Patty Smith said. "Because the planet is our grandmother."
