As of Wednesday evening, six jurors of 16, which includes alternates, had been selected.
Selection will continue Thursday.
Harve L. Johnson, 28, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Darisabel Baez, who died April 7, 2008.
The pathologist who performed Darisabel's autopsy testified at a previous hearing that the toddler was beaten for at least an hour and had 225 visible injuries to her body.
Darisabel's mother, Neida Baez, pleaded guilty last week to third-degree murder in the girl's death. Police said she was in the apartment in the 700 block of West Philadelphia Street as Johnson, her boyfried, was beating the girl and did nothing to stop him.
