Former York Mayor Charlie Robertson dropped off two checks Wednesday to contribute to the expenses from Hillary Clinton's recent visit to the city.
Robertson said he made it into Mayor John Brenner's office shortly after noon.
He gave the mayor his check for $1,000 and a $50 check from a city resident who read about the situation in the newspaper and asked Robertson to take her donation in as well.
"They were happy, and I was happy," Robertson said. "I'm hoping we can get other people to come forth and take care of this total. I think we might be able to do it."
The presidential candidate's rally at the corner of Market and Beaver streets April 19 cost the city about $3,000 in police overtime, public works expenses and loss to a local business, according to the current mayor.
Brenner said last week he would seek reimbursement from the candidate's campaign and one of her biggest supporters, who he would not name.
Since then, he has said no bill would be sent directly to her campaign, but a letter requesting a donation was sent to the unnamed supporter.
City resident Janet Kauffman, 64, said she thought Clinton's visit made the city look good, but she was upset by the subsequent talk about how much it cost.
"I was proud of York and then, boom," she said.
She doesn't want the Clinton camp to have to pay. So she asked Robertson to stop by her apartment building and pick up her check, because she is disabled and has trouble getting around.
If not, "I'm glad to help," she said.
Brenner said he was happy to receive the donations and will be sending Robertson and Kauffman thank-you letters.
