Aug 31, 2006 — A brief look at the history of expansion of the YCIAA and YAIAA for football:

1959

The Laurel Conference was in its last season. Teams included: Central York, Dallastown, Littlestown, Susquehannock and Kennard-Dale.

York Suburban played its first year of varsity football in '59 as an independent.

1960

The York County Interscholastic Athletic Association was founded with nine teams: Central York, Dallastown, Kennard-Dale, Littlestown, South Western, Spring Grove, Susquehannock, West York and York Suburban.

Both South Western and Spring Grove were playing their first years of varsity football.

1964

Red Lion and Hanover join the YCIAA, bringing the team total to 11. Red Lion defected from the Conference of Roses, while Hanover had played in the South Penn Conference, which folded in 1961.

1966

Kennard-Dale and Littlestown leave, taking the YCIAA total back down to nine. Kennard-Dale ceases its football program; Littlestown leaves to play an independent

schedule before joining the Blue Mountain League.

1970

York County Tech fields a team. The YCIAA stands at 10.

1974-76

Dover joins in '74, and Eastern York, York Catholic and a returning Kennard-Dale in '76 bring the league total to 14.

1981

William Penn enters the YCIAA from the Central Penn League.

1992

A year after the league changed its name to the York Area Interscholastic Athletic Assocation, Delone Catholic, Littlestown and New Oxford move over from the Blue Mountain League. The YAIAA total is 18.

2004

A decade goes by before the league is changed again. Bermudian Springs and Biglerville leave the Mid-Penn Conference to join the YAIAA, while Fairfield, which played its first varsity season as an independent, also enters the newly re-named York-Adams Interscholastic Athletic Association.

2008

Northeastern will field a varsity team for the first time, making the Bobcats the last school in York or Adams counties to field a football team. When this happens the YAIAA will stand at 22 squads.
