Seeking back-to-back wins for just the third time this season, the York Revolution mustered very little offense Wednesday night.
Just 24 hours after posting season highs in runs scored and winning their most lopsided game of 2009, the Revs were blanked in a rain-shortened, 3-0 loss to Newark in front of 3,125 fans at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
The game was called after six innings because of the inclement weather.
"We're not going to hit every night and their guy was pretty good, too," Revs manager Chris Hoiles said. "(York starter) Dan (Foli) was pretty good also. They just took advantage of their opportunities and we didn't."
The game was a scoreless pitching duel until Newark (27-24) pushed across its first run in the fifth inning via a home run from No. 9 hitter Michael Sandoval. He clubbed his second homer of the season over the Arch Nemesis.
Sanoval's dinger came with two outs in the inning off Foli. It was one of very few pitches the right-hander would've wanted back on the night.
After Charlton Jimerson led off the top of the sixth inning with a base hit to left field, former major leaguer Jacque Jones connected off Foli on a long blast into the playground in left center field.
"They were both first-pitch fastballs," Hoiles said of the two home runs. "Jones just went with the pitch on the outer half of the plate and got a good part of the bat on it."
Those three runs would be all the support Bears starter Bobby Brownlie
"He had everything going," Hoiles said of Brownlie. "Fastball, breaking ball, slider, change, he could throw anything for a strike at any point in time.
"So when you have 2-3-4 pitches going for you, it's going to be tough."
The Newark righty retired York (16-36) in order in three of the six innings.
The Revs' best scoring chance came when Keoni DeRenne doubled with two outs in
Foli was pretty effective in his own right, surrendering three runs on seven hits. The 28-year-old struck out four and didn't issue a walk.
