Bridgeport outfielder Adam Greenberg has struggled to return to the major leagues.
His only plate appearance in the big leagues ended with one pitch in his major league debut with the Cubs in 2005. The ball hit him in the back of the head. After struggling with headaches from the beaning, he's bounced around -- released by three different major league organizations.
Deciding to make his second foray into the independent Atlantic League, Greenberg plays near his childhood home for the Bridgeport Bluefish. Despite his struggles to earn a second chance in the big leagues, he has developed a reputation as a pest on the basepaths.
He managed to provide the speed and spark Bridgeport needed in a 4-1 Bluefish victory against the York Revolution at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn.
York (16-38) has lost three straight and dropped a franchise record 22 games under .500.
Greenberg singled in the third for Bridgeport (22-31). Among the leaders in the league in stolen bases, Greenberg put on a show. He stole second, he stole third and he scampered home on a passed ball to score the game's first run. Ryan Radmanovich followed with an RBI single, and Bridgeport held a 2-0 lead.
Greenberg, and his ability to steal, caused another Revs meltdown in the fourth. He reached on an error. On first base and daring York lefty Daryl Harang (2-7) to throw to first, the throw to first got past John Purdom to plate former Rev Rayner Bautista,
Revs outfielder Jason Aspito doubled in the fifth and moved to third on a Tom Collaro single. Ryan Goleski hit a sacrifice fly, but York scored just one run. In a matchup between the two worst teams in the league, York managed only five hits and committed two errors.
Esteban Yan (5-2) threw four hitless innings, and allowed just one run in seven innings of work.
