Former Cardinals and Rockies closer Dave Veres said he feels good enough to pitch when he rejoins the York Revolution on Friday night at Sovereign Bank Stadium.
"I'm going to throw right now," Veres said when reached by phone in Colorado.
The Revs placed Veres on the inactive list Monday when he left the team for family reasons. While at home he had his hip examined by his doctor to rule out any structural damage. Veres is attempting to become the first pitcher to reach the majors with an artificial hip.
"Everything turned out to be fine," Veres said. "It was just muscle strain."
Veres suffered a pulled groin in his last outing in spring training. He has appeared in seven games since and has not allowed a run, but he has wondered whether his hip could be the cause of the problem.
"I've been fighting it the whole season, and I knew I was going to come home," Veres said. "So I wanted to make sure everything was fine. I had it double-checked and nothing is structurally wrong."
Revs suffer sweep: The first-place Newark Bears sent the Revs home without a win Wednesday at Eagles and Bears Riverfront Stadium in Newark, N.J.
Newark rallied from a two-run deficit in Game 1, winning 4-3. The Bears cruised in the finale, winning 10-2.
The Revs now trail Newark by 71/2 games.
York (8-17) dropped the opener despite staking a two-run lead on a homer by designated hitter Matt Dryer in the
Dryer collected his third RBI by legging out an infield single that scored Travis Ezi with two outs in the top of the fourth. But Newark catcher John Pachot hit a solo homer in the fourth for the eventual game-winning run.
The Revs stranded 10 runners on base in the seven-inning game. Wayne Franklin (3-1) took the loss, allowing 10 hits, four walks and four earned runs in six innings.
Newark's Pat Stanley (2-0) surrendered eight hits, but he worked out of jams by striking out five.
In Game 2, the Revs kept the game close until the fifth inning. Tied at 2-2, Newark scored six runs, and York reliever Travis Phelps (0-2) did not retire a batter. The first six hitters all reached base and scored. Randall Simon secured the big hit, a three-run homer to right.
The Bears added two runs in the sixth.
Will Cunnane (2-0) allowed two earned runs in five innings. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter.
The Revs dropped to 4-20 all-time against Newark and will still be looking for their first win of the four-game series in the finale scheduled for 11:05 a.m. today. York right-hander Corey Thurman (0-4, 10.35 ERA) will face Newark righty Mike Bumstead (2-3, 6.07).
