There isn't much doubt that Central York and Dallastown are well acquainted on the soccer field.
Facing off twice during the regular season gave each team sufficient insight into the other going into Wednesday night's YAIAA tournament semifinal at Central York High School.
While the Panthers spread the ball around on offense, Dallastown found it difficult to produce goals against Central goalkeeper Rebecca Lauer. The Panthers beat the Wildcats, 3-2, to advance to Friday night's YAIAA championship game against Spring Grove.
The Rockets (16-3-2) advanced by blanking Susquehannock, 2-0, in Wednesday's doubleheader nightcap.
"They deserve this tonight," Central coach Liz Critchfield said. "They've played hard this year, and I've had them out in the rain, and they've been out in the snow. They deserve to be here."
The Panthers (13-5-0) advanced despite being without their star freshman, midfielder Casey Morrison.
Morrison was ineligible for the semifinal game against Dallastown, and her status is up in the air for Friday night's tournament final.
Critchfield declined to comment on why the freshman was ineligible.
What Critchfield was happy to discuss after the game was her team's dominating performance out of the gate against the Wildcats (15-5-1).
Two scores in the first five minutes against a flat Dallastown team gave the Panthers an early lead that they never relinquished.
"They came out strong," Critchfield said. "They need to prove a point, and they were just pumped."
Alyssa Klein scored the Panthers' first goal in the second minute of the game, and Kim Podolsky followed three minutes later. Danielle Miller recorded assists on both of the Panthers' early goals.
Central sprang to life early thanks in part to lessons learned from playing Dallastown twice during the regular season.
"(Dallastown's) very fast, and we need to contain them and get to the ball quicker," Critchfield said. "We did that
It didn't take the Wildcats very long to get a goal back from the Panthers, as Carly Rost sent a ball past Panther goalie Rebecca Lauer with 31 minutes remaining in the first half.
The Panthers weren't able to get that goal back in the first half -- but not for lack of trying.
Chelsea Clemens found open field with 1:00 left in the first half, working her way past the Wildcat defense before looking left but shooting right, fooling Dallastown goalie Sabrina Temple out of goal.
The shot bounced off the left post and out of bounds, allowing the Wildcats to escape the first 40 minutes down by just one.
Clemens found the goal for the Panthers with 25:05 remaining in the game, sending a shot into the left corner, past Victoria Krebs, who replaced Temple in goal for the Wildcats in the final half.
Dallastown controlled the field for most of the last 40 minutes, as the Panthers were content to play defense as fatigue began to set in.
But even as the Panthers' kicks got a little shorter and the sprints to the ball a little slower, Central never backed down to a Wildcat team desperate and determined to rally.
Sam Temple managed one goal with four minutes remaining in the game, but time quickly ran out on the Wildcats.
