ROBESONIA -- After Eastern York battled host Conrad Weiser to a scoreless tie through two overtimes of Thursday's District 3 Class AA girls' soccer playoff match, Golden Knight Kellsey Wagman, didn't worry about her penalty kick.
Even if scoring would send Eastern on to the next second round and avoid the end of her high school season and career.
"We were trying to figure it out, so I wasn't really thinking that," Wagman said. "I was just thinking, 'Make my goal. I was thinking, 'I have got this.' There wasn't really time for anything to run through your mind."
Wagman's shot tipped off the inside of the goalpost and rolled across the goal line as her team spilled from the sideline in celebration after its 3-1 victory in penalty kicks.
Amazingly, the exciting game in which both teams had several glorious chances to get on the scoreboard -- capped by Wagman's shot -- did not send Eastern coach Chrissy Crumling, 35 weeks
pregnant with her third child, into labor.
It did, however, send the Knights (19-2) on to Saturday's action, where they will face No. 1 seed Donegal at 5:30 p.m. at Central Dauphin Middle School.
The Indians advanced with a 1-0 overtime victory over East Pennsboro on Thursday.
Eastern's win also assured the Knights of their first PIAA girls' soccer tournament berth.
"This was one of our goals, to qualify for states, and these girls did it," Crumling said. "This puts us ahead of where we have ever been before. This senior
Sophomore Dani Krohn scored low-right on the Knights' first penalty kick, and teammate Brittany Gromling did the same on the second, which combined with the Scouts missing their first two PKs gave Eastern a big two-goal edge.
However, the Knights' Sadie Winship's blast went just over the crossbar, and Weiser's Jamie Salvador scored, cutting the gap. Taylor Adamson also shot high on Eastern's next attempt, but Knights' goalkeeper Erica Wood was ready to help her team.
Wood stayed in position and smothered a hard shot from Chelsea Ray, setting the stage for Wagman.
"We had (penalty kicks) against Central, so I wasn't nervous this time," Wood said. "Coach talked me through it and told me just get it done."
She got it done, just like she and Scouts' keeper Brooke Strickler did all through regulation and two overtimes. The pair combined to make 22 saves.
Crumling said the team was ready for penalty kicks after Central York eliminated the Knights the same way during last week's YAIAA tournament.
"We definitely were keeping PKs in the back of our minds because of what
happened in the county playoff game," she said. "It did prepare us and did get us thinking."
After dominating the second half, Eastern had to hold off Weiser (10-6-3) in the first overtime.
Wood stoned Amber Ulrich with 70 seconds remaining, one of four stops she made during the first extra 15-minute session.
Ulrich thought she won the game when her booming shot from 22 yards out found the back of the net, but time expired in the first overtime before the ball crossed the goal line.
It was the second goal the Scouts had nullified. Earlier, after one of their shots hit the crossbar, the rebound was put home, but the Weiser player was called for a handball.
Eastern had the same misfortune with less than 28 minutes remaining in regulation when Krohn banged in a rebound of Kate Powell's shot, but she was ruled offside.
"We definitely made it exciting," Crumling said.
