The York Daily Record/Sunday News has named its 2008 varsity girls' soccer YAIAA Div. II players of the year.

Player of the year

Sadie Winship, Eastern York: One of eight seniors on the Golden Knights' team, Winship helped the program reach historic heights with the first PIAA berth in school history.

Winship used her quickness and skill to net 16 goals for the Division II champions, who attempted to become the first YAIAA girls' soccer team to reach a district title game before falling to Tulpehocken in the semifinals.

Perhaps the most memorable goal of the season came in the double-overtime regular-season finale against Bermudian Springs. With a perfect campaign on the line, Winship scored the game-winner to cap a 16-0-0 year in league play for the Golden Knights.

"I don't really remember what happened, it happened so fast," Winship said. "... It's probably the biggest goal of my career."

All-stars

Kelsey Doutrich, Bermudian Springs: Last season's player of the year didn't miss a beat this year, leading the Eagles to the Section 4 title and a spot in the District 3 Class AA tournament. The junior was instrumental in the Eagles almost spoiling Eastern York's perfect regular-season record, scoring one goal in the double-overtime finale.

Courtney Ebersole, Bermudian Springs: Called a "scoring machine" by other coaches, the four-time all-star scored one of the Eagles' two goals as they lost to Northern Lebanon in the first round of districts. Often, she was the lone scoring threat in Bermudian's losses, recording the Eagles' goals in regular-season loss to Eastern and a YAIAA tournament loss to Susquehannock. Ebersole notched a hat trick in a shut out of Northeastern.

Lauren Hummel, Fairfield: The senior forward/midfielder shined through the Green Knights' winless season. Hummel recorded two goals in a loss to Dover.

Dani Krohn, Eastern York: Named to the all-star team for the second straight year, the sophomore was another key cog in the Golden Knights' record run. Krohn got the team back on track offensively with two goals in the Class AA quarterfinals after the squad was limited to penalty kicks in the previous match. "It was definitely exciting to come out here and score in such a big game," Krohn said, after leading Eastern to a 3-1 victory over top-seeded Donegal.

Maggie Kehm, York Suburban: The three-time all-star honoree paced the Trojans to a second-place finish in Section 3. Kehm gave Suburban a victory over section rival Dover, scoring in extra time for a 2-1 Trojan victory in the April 29 match.

Stevi Laird, York Suburban: The junior made the jump to the all-star list after an honorable mention nod last season. The midfielder netted two goals in a defeat of Northeastern on April 9 and scored her team's lone goal in a loss to Eastern on May 31.

Hannah Lott, Biglerville: Quick hands and a fearless approach to attacking the ball made this goalie the No. 1 reason for the Canners' success, according to coach Les Heggan. Lott's saves helped her team to a 15-6-2 overall record and a spot in the District 3 Class AA playoffs.

Mary McGann, York Catholic: The junior midfielder was praised for her ability to hit the long-distance shots. McGann's season highlights include a two-goal game as the Fighting Irish overwhelmed Fairfield, 8-0.

Ashley Romero, York Catholic: The junior forward helped the Irish to a respectable 7-7-2 record and a third-place finish in Section 4.

Kelsey Showers, Biglerville: The freshman found the back of the net 19 times for the Canners, displaying excellent footwork in setting up her shots.

Honorable mention: Jenna Showers, Biglerville; Erika Collins, Northeastern; Jenna Ludwig, Dover; Elaira Robins, York Suburban; Cady Harman, Dover; Erica Wood, Eastern York; Larysa Miller, Bermudian Springs; Sarah Hains, Fairfield; Katie Zech, West York.

Coach of the year

Chrissy Crumling, Eastern York: Crumling guided her talent-loaded team to an unprecedented 16-0-0 league record, and her fellow coaches honored her with her second nod as coach of the year. "Anytime a club goes undefeated in a season speaks well of the job the coach has done all season," said Biglerville coach Les Heggan.
